How did Donsje get started?
Donsje Amsterdam was founded in 2013 by Florentine van Oosten Slingeland, a designer inspired by her global travels. While living in Singapore, Florentine began experimenting with handcrafted accessories, drawing from the skills of artisans she met during her journeys. Positive feedback on her initial designs encouraged her to return to Indonesia, refine her creations, and test them at local fairs. The brand’s true genesis came when Florentine became pregnant with her first child—sparking her vision to create timeless, nostalgic, and high-quality children's footwear and accessories.
Her experiences with local craftsmanship, combined with a love for natural materials and earthy tones, shaped Donsje’s unique identity. Today, the brand is recognized globally for its irresistibly cute and thoughtful designs.
What makes your pieces high-end, and what draws your customers to this level of childrenswear?
Donsje’s high-end appeal lies in its commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Each piece is handcrafted in small, family-run ateliers using premium, sustainably sourced materials. The designs are both playful and elegant, with meticulous attention to detail—such as 3D animal accents and refined stitching.
Customers are drawn to the brand for its durability, ethical production practices, and nostalgic charm. Donsje creates products that are not only functional but also hold sentimental value, often becoming heirloom pieces cherished across generations.
How do you incorporate sustainable and ethical manufacturing processes into your brand? Sustainability and ethical responsibility are at the core of Donsje’s philosophy. The brand works exclusively with dedicated factories and skilled artisans who are paid fairly and operate in safe environments. Donsje prioritizes the use of eco-friendly and natural materials, ensuring products meet stringent European safety standards. Additionally, a portion of Donsje’s profits supports the Shining Star Foundation, a school in Nairobi founded by Florentine and her husband. This initiative reflects their commitment to giving back and creating a positive impact in underprivileged communities.
What are some of your favorite pieces from the collectsion?
It is very hard to pick a favorite! But some items are just extra special or iconically Donsje.
Kapi Animal Booties: With playful animal characters and soft sheep-wool lining, these booties offer both comfort and personality, making them an instant favorite for little feet. We have many designs that reappear in every Fall/Winter collectsion. They bring so much joy and softness to every look.
Dannae Jacket: This enchanting coat debuted in our Festive collectsion this year, and it was love at first sight from the moment we received the sample. If you’re familiar with Donsje, you know we adore experimenting with tulle—from skirts to trousers, sleeves, and more. For the first time, we incorporated a tulle detail into a jacket, and the result is absolutely stunning.
Janice Dress: This dress is every little girl’s dream, especially during the holiday season. Perfect for any occasion, its flowing, princess-like skirt and delicate puffed sleeves create an irresistibly charming look.
