Less Washing is More

Denim doesn’t need to be washed after every wear. Overwashing can lead to fading, shrinking, and wear on the fabric. Aim to wash jeans every ten wears or when they’re visibly dirty. The longer you can go without washing, the better your denim will age.

Out Damned Spot!

For small stains or spills, spot cleaning is a great alternative to full washes. Use a mild detergent and a damp cloth to target problem areas without affecting the rest of the fabric.

When Washing is Necessary

If you absolutely need to wash your denim, turn the garment inside out to protect the outer surface. Use cold water and a gentle detergent to minimize fading and shrinking. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals, which can weaken the fabric fibers.

Hand-Washing Delicates

For high-quality or raw denim, hand-washing is recommended to preserve the integrity of the fabric. Fill a tub or sink with cold water, add a small amount of mild detergent, and gently agitate the denim. Let it soak for up to half an hour before rinsing thoroughly.

Air-Dry Always

Heat can be damaging to denim, so avoid using a dryer at all costs. Air-drying is best—either lay your denim flat or hang it to preserve its shape. If you’re worried about stiffness after air-drying, give your denim a gentle shake or stretch it while it’s still damp.

Myth-Busting: Freezing Your Denim

There's a long-held belief that freezing your denim is the best alternative to washing. Sorry to tell you, it's just not true. While freezing might help with odors temporarily, it doesn’t eliminate bacteria or really clean the fabric. Stick to spot cleaning and airing out your denim to keep it fresh between washes.
