Being part of the Top Quality Replica Hermes Belts community led me to discover some of my favorite emerging designers, many of whom are recent graduates of fashion design programs (Sydney Pimbley and Cormio, for example). I have always been curious about their creative process and background—and now that I’m studying fashion design myself, I have a greater appreciation for what goes into making an original garment. The behind-the-scenes of fashion design often involves collage, something I learned when I started my studies at Polimoda in Florence. I’ve been making collages since I was a kid, but I’d never considered the cut-and-paste process as a tool for spontaneously discovering personal style or even digesting research. A collage can illustrate the concept or mood of a collectsion and demonstrate the silhouette for a look.

For my midterm project, I had to select a decade and subculture from the 20th century as references for creating a collectsion. I chose the 1970s and grunge. With the ’70s, I was attracted to the sense of freedom, open sexuality, spontaneity, and playful naivety of the era. In terms of silhouette, I liked the flowiness of long A-line skirts and dresses, exaggerated collars, and hot pants. I combined these features with elements of grunge, specifically looking at Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain. His anti-fashion look of messy hair and secondhand pieces mixed with destroyed denim sent the message: “I don’t care.” Not caring about convention, not caring about being a misfit. I also learned about Cobain’s chronic stomach pain, which was so severe that he wanted to kill himself (he later committed suicide on April 5, 1994). For me, Cobain’s physical suffering is a metaphor for feeling constricted, something that resonates with me and others as well. In my collectsion, I want to convey the feeling of being constricted or uncomfortable while still longing for freedom and spontaneity.

I have been working with collage for my design project, but I got to thinking that collage can serve as an everyday tool for styling the clothes you want to buy and the ones already in your closet. With the ease of taking photos on your smartphone or screenshotting your wish-list, you can use collage to amp up your personal style and develop the message you send through the clothes you wear. Perhaps it’s an incentive to learn more about what you gravitate towards. I’ve spent a lot of time doing collage these past four months, and it has given me the opportunity to learn more about my interests and my approach to fashion.
