Home Decor for Maximalists
Sometimes I look at Instagram photos of sparse, museum-like homes with fluid lines and uncluttered shelves, and rather than thinking “ah, how serene and modern,” I just mentally fill in all that clean space with books, plants, vignettes, pillows, etc., etc. I am unapologetically maximalist when it comes to my home. I love having lots to look at. Colors and textures that create a space with a (big) personality all its own. Striking a balance that feels hip and charismatic versus an all-out hoarder house, however, is the key to perfecting a maximalist aesthetic.
Lessons I’ve learned about maximalism:
- Organized chaos. There’s a difference between a room that’s intentionally full of stuff and one where all the many things have their own place. Do this by grouping things together using trays, arranging your books by size and color, and keeping pillows and blankets placed intentionally. Mainly, keeping the space clean will make it feel more put together.
- Artwork everywhere! Gallery walls are a maximalist’s best friend, but so are sculptural vases, interesting furniture, and items you’ve collectsed to put on display. Show off the things you love!
- Maximalism doesn’t have to mean overwhelming your space with color. Sure, you can go for the whole rainbow, but it’s also totally fine to work within a coordinated palette.
- Don’t be afraid to mix lots of patterns. So long as you have a grounding color scheme, most prints and patterns can work together.
