“Paris Fashion Week has always been a dream for me,” says Marie-Ève Lecavalier on a video call. Her brand, founded in 2016 in her hometown of Montreal, has been on a steady rise over the past couple of seasons, with a spot in the International Woolmark Prize finals in 2021 and now a slot on the coveted Paris Fashion Week schedule.
She’s approached her arrival à Paris and her spring 2022 collectsion with a newfound ease. “I’m trying to be more flexible,” she says of her design process this season. “I’m rolling with what suppliers have and being open-minded.” This more sustainable, chilled-out approach has resulted in one of her most compelling collectsions yet. Suiting is relaxed and slightly oversized, with pants pooling and lean jackets tossed on top. Lecavalier remains an advocate for sustainability: Denim is made from 100% recycled fibers and not dyed; a floral print on a white coat is created by pressing flowers from her own garden into the fabric.
The most exciting idea, though, is the netting-like mid-layers worn with almost every look. Handmade from scraps of leather, scuba, or leftover fabrics, they are hand-crocheted and have an arty, cerebral feel, like a waistcoat for a mermaid. Each adds a clever texture and dimension to Lecavalier’s suiting, but you can imagine Hot Girl Summer acolytes wearing them bare—or close to it.
