Dress Code: Gabriella Khalil Never Shies Away From a Power Outfit

A breakfast event pops up for tomorrow. What’s a failsafe outfit you for an early morning?

I always turn to a really good jacket to elevate an outfit—especially at the last minute. This could be a blazer, which I’ll pair with jeans and a heel. Otherwise, I love a leather jacket or even an oversized bomber jacket for a casual but chic look.

What type of dress code fills you with dread? And what’s your workaround for that?

If there’s no dress code or understanding of the type of event—that fills me with uncertainty. I always prefer to really understand the dress code. In times when I am unsure, I will stick to elevated and classic tailored pieces that feel fancy enough to work for either cocktail or casual vibes. I would say my general rule, though, is to be more dressed up than too casual…it never hurts!

A luncheon is on the calendar. How might you approach putting together a look for that?

I love a pencil skirt, boots, and a simple top with great accessories to match. This is my go-to, more often than not.

What are your thoughts on costume parties? All in with the DIY, or politely decline?

I don’t really go to that many. Usually my initial reaction is an eye roll, but then when I get into the theme, I have fun and I love it! Deep down, I love a themed party, but they do take a lot of extra work. I went to a party a few years ago where the dress code was to only wear red, white, or black. It was one of my favorite parties because it felt so thematic and the palette was really strong for the event, but it also only required little effort on my part to find a look.

The 5 p.m. slump has hit, but a dinner party is on the cards. What will energize you when shifting from day to night?

I turn on music and put on a face mask to get in the zone. As for fashion, I will head in the opposite direction and indulge in the idea of getting extra festive. This could consist of strong color, legs out, and great heels, or layering more accessories. Oftentimes, it is the actual fashion pieces that will turn my mood up.

What’s a failsafe outfit you tend to rinse and repeat?

A really strong black suit. It’s chic, works every time, and I feel so good when I go in this direction. When styled right, a good suit is magic. I would also shout out my Jimmy Choo heels which always hit the mark.

What about black tie? Do you like to take risks, or play it pretty safe?

I always want to feel confident. Sometimes I feel like being sexy and will go for low-cut or cut-outs, and sometimes I take risks and go hard on vibrant color or movement. Other times, I will just opt for simple but chic. I wouldn’t say I have a specific approach; I go with what is speaking to me at the time and also what the event is. Sometimes I will think, ‘Yes, I have been waiting to wear this outfit—go for it!’ I never shy away from getting dressed up. I embrace it!

What after-dark pieces get the most wear in your wardrobe, year after year?

I would say the most consistent pieces are jewelry. I also tend to lean on labels like Diotima or Christopher John Rogers for statement evening looks because their pieces are always wonderful and artful.

Do you have a favorite party-ready piece or accessory that always inspires conversation with
strangers?

Lately it has been the EREDE collaboration jewelry that I launched with the brand. People keep pointing it out to me every time I wear it.

What’s always in your evening bag?

Lip gloss and a moisturizing lip balm, always some face powder, my phone, a little tube of perfume, and mints.
