At Miu Miu’s SS22 runway show, models made their way down the catwalk in ultra miniskirts, tiny tops, and cropped jackets—thus beginning a cultural reset with the midriff front and center. Thanks to Miuccia, belly-baring crop tops have resurged as a wardrobe staple not to skimp out on (no pun intended). The perfect match for a high-waist pant or baggy trouser, the crop top offers a playful balance of proportions should you desire more coverage. Its most famed counterpart, however, has to be the ultra miniskirt, as if a bare midriff was not enough. This summer, a new crop of tiny tops have taken over; think slinky party tops, printed halter tops, tube tops of the early aughts, and more.
Chic cropped versions of men’s button-ups were seen at Miu Miu’s FW22 collectsion, a continuation of the success of their previous season, and also at Jacquemus’ latest show. Emerging designers like Christopher Esber and Matthew Bruch also took note with their takes on cropped cotton shirts. At Conner Ives FW22, the designer took a cue from the early ’00s and debuted a crop of tiny T-shirts to pair with a low-rise skirt, a sentiment synonymous with the era. The slinky, silky party top was on full display at Supriya Lele’s fall show, while Victor Glemaud chose a more minimalist approach to the trend with a neutral tube top.
