A manicure is the perfect blank canvas to reflect your personality, mood, and current trends. Whether you’re into minimalism (hello, micro-French) or maximalism (gem nails, anyone?), there’s a nail shape that is the perfect foundation for any design: the long almond.
Seen on celebrities like Dua Lipa, Blackpink’s Lisa, and Selena Gomez, as well as on the runways of Tom Ford and Schiaparelli, the long almond nail is incredibly versatile. Here’s everything you need to know about the universally flattering shape.
What is the long almond nail shape?
“Think of the shape of an actual almond,” nail artist Naomi Yasuda tells Vogue. “The nail is wide at the bottom and gets thinner toward the top, ending in a soft, rounded point.”
It’s the perfect balance for when you want to add length, but don’t want it to feel aggressive, says nail artist Juan Alvear. “It reads like a natural extension of the finger.”
“It is a classic shape because it never goes out of fashion. It looks natural and classy, and it makes everyone’s hands look beautiful,” adds Yasuda.
How do I maintain the health of my long nails?
From natural nails to Gel X manicures and hard gel extensions, there are a few ways to achieve the length this shape requires, but what matters most is preserving the nails’ structural integrity. “It comes down to structure. A proper apex, clean sidewalls, and support through the stress point,” Alvear says, adding that most damage comes from over-filing the nails.
Yasuda agrees, noting that it’s important not to file the sides of the nails too much, otherwise they’ll crack. She also recommends applying a cuticle oil every day, even if you’re not wearing gel polish. “You should always wear a nail strengthener or a few coats of regular polish to give them a protective layer.”
What designs look best on long almond nails?
Nail artist and Tweezerman Pro Artist Tom Bachik previously told Vogue, “I don’t really let the shape determine the design as I feel it’s more of a personal preference,” so there aren’t any rules when it comes to decorating your new nail shape. However, if you’re into the “clean girl” look, the spring-summer 2026 ready-to-wear runways are a great place to start for inspiration.
Tom Ford and Schiaparelli both featured long almond nails in natural finishes. Think polishes with a glossy, translucent finish or subtle shades like link pink, beige, or nude. The idea is to stick as closely as possible to the nails’ natural tone to achieve an elegant, modern, and effortless feel.
Meanwhile, if “clean girl” vibes aren’t your thing, you’re in luck, too. Whimsy, color, and experimentation are all fair game this season, as seen through the resurgence of the red mani (seen here in a half moon style by Yasuda for Amanda Lepore), trending gem nails (done by Alvear for Lisa at the 2025 Emmys and lately seen on everyone from Sabrina Carpenter to Kylie Jenner), polka dots, and of course, florals. There’s truly no shortage of inspiration to go around.
Do I need to give my nails a break between manicures?
Not necessarily! Both Yasuda and Alvear say that when the application and removal are done properly, breaks aren’t needed. For example, Gel X should always be soaked off—not peeled—and hard gel extensions should be filed off by a professional.
If your nails are thin or damaged, Yasuda recommends carefully removing any product on your nails, using a nail strengthener for added protection, and applying cuticle oil daily to help the new nail grow healthy. And if you’re new to long nails, “keep a small nail file in your bag to fix any tiny snags before they turn into a big break,” and use your knuckles or the sides of your fingers to open things like soda cans, she adds.
