Launched as part of Saint Laurent’s Pre-Fall 2015 collection, the YSL College Bag has remained in the brand’s line-up for more than a decade. Today, it is available in Mini and Medium sizes, as well as several leather and suede finishes.
Design
The College has a structured silhouette with chevron quilting, a pointed flap and the prominent interlocking YSL logo. Its short top handle provides another way to carry the bag.
Both current sizes have a top handle and a detachable strap. The College Medium’s chain strap is long enough for crossbody wear, while the Mini’s leather-and-chain strap can be worn two ways. A magnetic tab keeps the flap closed without adding a visible buckle or clasp.
The design is elegant rather than minimal, and the large logo will not suit anyone looking for discreet branding. However, the shape and quilting remain recognisable more than a decade after the bag launched.
Practicality and Functionality
The College Medium is the more practical, everyday bag. Its interior is split into two main compartments by a central zipped pocket, which makes it easy to separate smaller essentials instead of letting everything collect at the bottom. It also has a large slot pocket on the back of the bag.
On the other hand, the Mini has a simpler interior with one flat pocket. It still offers the top handle and detachable leather-and-chain strap, but it is designed to carry fewer everyday essentials.
Choice of material affects how carefully the bag needs to be handled. The current Medium is available in lambskin and suede, while the Mini is offered in shiny or shiny crackled calfskin, though Saint Laurent releases new colours and materials every season. Lambskin can show scratches and corner wear, while suede requires extra care around rain, marks and colour transfer.
Saint Laurent College Bag Sizes and Dimensions
The College is currently easiest to find in Mini and Medium. A Large size was also produced, but it does not currently appear in Saint Laurent’s online College collection and is rarely available new. It may have been discontinued, although Saint Laurent has not announced this and some retailers may still have remaining stock. We have included its dimensions below for reference.
| Size | Dimensions | Strap details |
|---|---|---|
| Mini | 20 x 13 x 3cm 7.9 x 5.1 x 1.2in | Detachable leather-and-chain strap; 50cm drop |
| Medium | 24 x 17 x 6.5cm 9.4 x 6.6 x 2.5in | 6.5cm top-handle drop; 55cm chain length |
| Large | 32 x 20 x 8.5cm 12.5 x 7.8 x 3.3in | 7cm top-handle drop; 36.5cm strap drop |
What Fits Inside the Saint Laurent College Bag?
Based on its dimensions, the Mini is best for a phone, cardholder, keys and one or two small beauty products. Exact phone compatibility will depend on the handset and case, and the bag’s 3cm depth leaves little room for bulky items.
The Medium has enough space for a full-size wallet, phone, keys, sunglasses and a small cosmetics pouch. Its two compartments help keep those items organised, but the central zipped divider also limits how easily you can carry a single bulky object. The Large offers more overall capacity, although its shorter strap is less suitable for crossbody wear.
YSL College Bag Colours and Materials
Available colours and materials can change over time. Saint Laurent’s current College collection includes the Medium in black quilted lambskin with gold or silver-toned hardware, Light Musk lambskin and Golden Leaf suede. The current Mini appears in black shiny crackled calfskin and Deep Hot Wine shiny calfskin.
Black lambskin is the most understated of the current options. The lighter lambskin and suede versions make the quilting more noticeable, but pale leather and suede generally need more careful handling around marks and colour transfer.

YSL College Bag Price History*
The Medium College launched at $2,450 in May 2015 and was still listed at $2,450 when this review was updated in January 2023. It now retails for $2,800. 14% increase over eleven years.
*Price history shown for the Medium size. Last updated September 2026.
In terms of price increases, 14% over 11 years is unusually modest for a long-running Saint Laurent bag. For comparison, the Medium Envelope increased by 44% between 2019 and 2026, while the original Medium LouLou rose by 49% between 2019 and 2022.

Final Thoughts: Is the Saint Laurent College Bag Worth It?
The YSL College remains a strong choice if you want a recognisable Saint Laurent bag with more organisation than a simple flap or camera style bag. The Medium is the best option for everyday use: it has enough room for the essentials, a genuinely useful divided interior and several ways to carry it.
The Mini works better as a compact day-to-evening bag, but its shallow shape and simpler interior make it less practical. It is also worth being realistic about the materials. Lambskin and suede look luxurious, yet neither is ideal for someone who wants a bag they can use without thinking about scratches, rain or colour transfer.
After more than a decade in the Saint Laurent line-up, the College has proved that its design has staying power. If you prefer something less structured, it’s worth checking out our YSL Le 5 à 7 guide. You can also read our reviews of the Saint Laurent Y Tote and Saint Laurent Mombasa.
