Johanna Tran specializes in creating bespoke nail designs for her discerning clientele at Jo and Her Nails in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood. From soft clouds to bright tips, star scapes, cartoons, retro accents, and beyond, there's seemingly nothing she can't paint. We caught up with her to talk about her career and all the coolest nail trends she sees coming this fall.
Johanna: I have always had an innate skill of drawing since I was young. Being a nail artist has allowed me to fully utilize this childhood skillset.
In the past three years, I earned my certification and followed my instincts and passion that I have for this artistry. I love creating unique nails for my clients.
Trends I foresee for the fall includes adding a layer of chrome on the tips of a french manicure, creating a very discreet shimmer to the nails. Browns and deep blues are my favorite colors for the autumn with almond shaped nails. I am also enamored to autumn leaves and dry floral patterns.
Besides following trends, a nail artist also has to develop a rapport with their clients, understanding their needs. After all, nails are an extension of their personality.
For example, if I'm doing wedding nails, I will try and get as much information as I can from the client in regards to the venue, the dress, etc., and mix a bespoke color for the bride taking all that into account, as well as what will look elegant and angelic for the happy day.
In general, the sheer natural beauty of Seattle inspires me to dream up new designs every day.
