Portland is known for its quirky style and distinct approach to fashion thatโs as comfortable as it is crafty. This is a city that supports independent makers and shakers, whether thatโs the team behind a grilled cheese food truck, a burgeoning street artist, or the owners of a carefully curated Pearl District shop. Check out some of our favorite boutiques from our sister city to the south and discover why Portland has something special for everyone.
I Am That is a curated clothing project that brings vintage into the contemporary fashion context. Established in 2016 with the goal of creating an intentional, sustainable shopping experience, they focus on highlighting fresh vintage pieces that fit seamlessly into a forward-thinking closet. The shop also collaborates with local and emerging designers to cultivate a community of independent voices in fashion.
Just when we thought we couldnโt love milliner Brookes Boswell any more, she launched her own boutique with a curated collectsion of like-minded labels. With designers like Caron Callahan, Correll Correll, and Sara Barner, Boswellโs edit is basically our dream come true. The workshop is located in the back of the boutique, allowing customers to experience the design process of her eponymous hat line while discovering a range of emerging talent as they shop. The whimsical, light-filled decor of the boutique is the perfect backdrop to showcase the range of emerging designers that Boswell has curated.
Stand Up Comedy describes its vibe as โwhen a shop is not a shop.โ We'd have to agree โ The downtown emporium is more like a dream closet and itโs no laughing matter. Owner Diana Kim eschews traditional retail rules for a unique approach that enables a non-consumerist experience. Walk through the gallery-like space and you'll get exactly that.
Machus is a family-owned, modern men's boutique in Portlandโs Lower East Burnside neighborhood. Their mission statement is simple: to curate a store with the most compelling designers in the contemporary menโs market. Often avoiding stocking up with more obvious, larger labels, Machus selects upcoming, under-the-radar designers and mixes them with iconic staples to create a totally unique shopping experience.
Tiro Tiro stocks a small line of jewelry and art objects created by Portland resident and three-time brand designer Teresa Robinson. Informed by traditional craft practices and fifteen years of jewelry-making experience, Robinson hand-makes necklaces, rings, and earrings in organic, sculptural shapes that merge form, texture, and aesthetics with the aim of bringing joy to the beholder.
