In recent years, Montreal has experienced something of a creative Renaissance. Creative designers have been flocking to the city while new boutiques set the tone for the fashion set. We’ve loved watching Montreal’s independent shops hit their stride. Check out some of our favorites below to be an early adopter of this style awakening.
Housed in the brick walls of a former antique shop, Roony is filled with classically cool brands like A.P.C. and Adidas alongside new up-and-coming designers like Patrik Ervell and John Elliott. Their goal is to provide their customers with products that they can wear everyday, accomplished through their curated selection of clothing that makes quality manufacturing the highest priority. With a unique story behind each product, a shop like Rooney is just begging to be explored.
Set in Montreal’s fashionable Mile End neighborhood, Unicorn is jam packed with international, Canadian, and locally made womenswear. Statement pieces and wearable separates shine in their curated selection of apparel and accessories. Shop Eve Gravel, Betina Lou, Covet, and so much more.
When you’ve worked with fashion greats like Erdem, Zandra Rhodes, and Rouland Mouret, it shows. Canadian designer Eliza Faulkner’s namesake line of clothing for the elegant sportif launched in 2012 when she moved home to British Columbia after living and working in London. We love the architectural silhouettes and playful, feminine feel of her timeless dresses and separates.
Rose McMahon opened Rightful Owner with the dream of recreating the same excitement of dressing up that she had as a child—getting dressed as an act of love, with no understanding of what was “cool” or chic or sexy. She’d often enlist one of her brothers or a neighbourhood boy to complete her eccentric fashion visions. Dressing up was both limitless and beautiful. Today, her shop takes that same concept of over-the-top clothing and makes it more accessible for everyday wear.
Lopez is a lifestyle store founded in 2018 with a foundation in streetwear, punk, and skate. Influenced by the diverse cultures of the neighbourhood and the owners’ own backgrounds, Lopez embodies that DIY punk spirit, resulting in a totally unique retail experience.
