hello, our model is wearing the small with a 32 inch bust, we generally say there is about a two inch grade between sizes but there is some tolerance with the knit . . .
that being said, a 40 inch bust would stretch the knit quite a bit so might not be optimum
their website converts a medium to a US size 6 to 8

Yes, I would say you should go for the medium, it is a small fit and the model is smaller than your measurements. The waistband is ribbed encasing an elastic about three inches wide. It has a fair bit of stretch. Hope that helps!.
