Dressing Under the Tuscan Sun

Frances Mayes, the leading character of the 2003 rom-com, Under the Tuscan Sun, finds herself spontaneously buying a historical villa in the Tuscan countryside after an unexpected divorce. It’s pop culture’s familiar fantasy—the restless American woman who travels to Italy to find herself. The more recent, Eat Pray Love, recounts a similar narrative. The allure of Italy isn’t news to anyone—tourism (and food!) is the largest industry here. Yes, here. I’m one of those restless American women who has made Tuscany home, but I’m still waiting for my historical villa...In the meantime, I’ve mastered some simpler pursuits, like optimizing my wardrobe for a fickle spring to summer transition, and I have some practical—yet elegant styling pointers for your next trip to the region of rolling hills and medieval cities.

I’ve learned that layers serve you well—a light jacket keeps you comfortable into the wee hours after a late dinner and a glass (bottle?) or two of wine, and it guarantees a fuss-free entry into the historic Catholic churches. Trousers protect your legs from an army of mosquitos and are a chic alternative to denim cut-offs. Regarding the mosquitos, they’re really an omnipresent menace (maybe it’s a stretch, but they seem to particularly love foreigners)—I avoid them by keeping my pants long and wearing closed-toe shoes. Ballet flats for day and some little heels for a special dinner. Ok, heels are the least practical item here, but I keep mine in an everyday tote bag—ready for a spontaneous occasion. I’ve developed a strong appreciation for how Tuscan, and particularly Florentine and Lucchese ladies have a knack for dressing…I try my best to keep up!
