“Altuzarra: Because I am never mad at a sequin, especially ones this size! And paired with a crochet polo, it’s just enough to wear—where? Wherever you want.”

“Paco Rabanne: I’m very partial to the idea of an elevated sweatpant and like that you can adjust the slouchiness of these with zippers to accommodate your comfort level at any given time. Plus, who doesn’t love a sparkly tank top?”

“My wardrobe would be a much happier place if I had this embroidered, surprisingly practical Gucci cardigan. The black background; oversize shape; and exquisitely detailed butterflies, flowers, and birds make it an everyday staple—I’d wear it with jeans, a metallic skirt, this cherry slip dress . . . anything goes! Plus, it would be an instant heirloom.”

“Pre is excellent for building your wardrobe foundations, and for a lifelong camel convert, this cashmere Oscar de la Renta sweater-and-skirt look is elegance at its most effortless. I like how the classic combination of camel and black are reworked. Perhaps the similarly opposed Erdem trench would be the perfect topper.”

“Burberry: Already my daily uniform, just done so much better.”

“Maybe, just maybe, I’ll take a break from my jeans and T-shirts to channel my inner No Doubt–era Gwen Stefani with Gucci’s plaid trousers . . . and a T-shirt.”

“This Edun look is my heavy-duty heaven.”

“Next-level basics. It’s tough to tell in the photo, but the pants—in addition to being embossed with Area’s signature Braille-like texture—are laced with metallic gold. My favorite part are the accessories: mod-meets-Baroque court shoes and a rhinestone ‘garter.’ Fans of the latter, rejoice: The designers assured me they’ll be producing that styling piece. I only wish I had this look for the spate of holiday parties that lies ahead.”

“I’m a newly converted sucker for the mock turtleneck—and this one, a light baby blue number stamped with a Versace logo on the collar, is pure throwback heaven. And under a sporty zip-up blazer? Pinch me now!”

“I loved Chanel’s Pre-Fall Lagerfeld-directed mise-en-scènes that focused on masculin/feminin. It’s nearly a century since Chanel used bouclé to recast a new, menswear-touched wardrobe for women. Now the pendulum has swung, and Lagerfeld is deploying the house fabric for men. It’s experimental—and maybe a bit of a throwaway, too—but I found it interesting. Tweak the color a bit—and maybe lose the skirt—and I might even wear it.”

“Two things I love: A supercool jacket—this nails it—and a skirt length that veers just close enough to dowdy. Of course, Alexander Wang has to go and add grommet studding to its hem and accessorize it with a chain and buckle double belt. Actually, make that three things I love.”

“Does every woman fantasize about going to the Oscars? Maybe I’ve got awards season on the brain, because ever since I glanced at shots of Erdem’s Pre-Fall collectsion, I’ve been flipping back and forth between daydreams that involve his ruffled, polka-dot gowns. One daydream features his baby pink, cold-shoulder dress, the other the V-neck gown in white, which is a red carpet look with the ease of a tee. One day, maybe . . .”

“Victoria Beckham’s lace-trimmed slip dress and trench—colors so gorgeous I might consider trading in my basic black and navy.”

“What has caught my eye most in the Pre-Fall collectsions are clothes that are very special and somewhat timeless, which is to say that I am not looking for trend, for sportswear, or for obvious utility. But how useful would these two pieces be in any wardrobe? The perfect black lace dress—the one you always hope to find but never can—from Chanel, and an ombré cape of ostrich feathers from Erdem that is just the most beautiful thing.”

“Paco Rabanne: I like the slouchy pant paired with a sporty, graphic tank, but what I really love is the big silver earring. I am really liking the idea of a sporty look with an almost-romantic dangly earring. And I also love the sort of witchy-tough shoe and furry bag—great accessories to tie the whole look together. I think Pre-Fall is really about pieces/separates, and this look has so many elements to it and things to shoot, buy, and wear.”

I’m really intrigued by this Paco Rabanne look—there’s something very cool and Parisian about the combination of what looks like silk techno fabric, the furry edge, the glamour of a black dress, and the attitude of a sweatshirt tied around the hips. Plus the cut-down biker boots.

“J.W.Anderson put forth a lot of big ideas (and big shapes) in his collectsion, but this leathery minidress shouldn’t go unnoticed. It’s coolly directional—note the slight pouf of the sleeve and frilled edges—but still easygoing enough to slink down a city street and not draw glances. That’s a pretty great balancing act by my count.”

“I loved Alexander Wang’s cool-without-trying-too-hard collectsion. The ad hoc mix of textures was fantastic: striped stockings, grommeted gloves, studded platforms, not to mention the cheetah-print coat—obsessed!”
