21 Escapist Films That Will Make You Book Your Next Vacation Inline

“One of my favorite films is Luca Guadagnino’s Io Sono Amore (I Am Love), the director’s other luxuriant romp with Tilda Swinton. But Tilda plays second fiddle to the Villa Necchi, a 1930s masterpiece of a home in the middle of Milan that becomes the real star of the movie. I visited the Villa Necchi Campiglio a couple of summers ago, in the dead of August heat, and fell further in love.”

“I dream of vacations often since I rarely take them, but one film that always makes me fantasize about giving everything up and enjoying life is The Beach. While it had its rocky moments, the lush landscape of the Thai beaches makes it truly captivating and inspirational. Thinking about it now makes me want to book a flight.”

“Heading South tells the story of three women—one of whom is played by Charlotte Rampling—on a ladies-only vacation in Haiti. It’s impossible to take your eyes off Rampling, who must have been almost 60 at the time the movie was shot. She is insanely gorgeous in her one-piece bathing suit and quickly seduces Legba (Ménothy Cesar), a handsome 18-year-old islander. Maybe more bewitching than the affair, though, are the endless sandy white beaches (always seemingly deserted, always bathed in golden-hour light), rustling palm trees, and turquoise blue waters of the Haitian coastline. There is a scene where the couple are basking on a cluster of reddish-brown rocks in what looks like the middle of the Caribbean sea. I remember sitting in the movie theater wishing I could click my heels and be transported to that very spot.”

“Wim Wenders’s Lisbon Story is pretty much my idea of heaven: an elegantly dilapidated Portuguese-tiled old house; a music-like mix of languages; uncrowded city streets; and the sounds of fado, courtesy of Madredeus, that are somehow mournful and joyful at the same time.”

“That Man From Rio is pretty hard to beat. If the scenery doesn’t cure what ails you, Jean-Paul Belmondo will. (Françoise Dorléac—and her summer-perfect caper costuming—is no slouch, either.)”

“Sure, it’s a horror movie, but I love the Bodega Bay setting anyway. I’ve been tempted to go up for a visit when I’ve been out in San Francisco (ideally in an Aston Martin just like Tippi’s), but I’ve never done it. I’m too afraid the modern version won’t live up to Alfred Hitchcock’s.”

“Cairo Time panders shamelessly to my every escapist fantasy, and I would gladly drop everything to roam around Cairo with Alexander Siddig.”

“I don’t have two brothers, but I do have two sisters, and I would love to escape on a spiritual journey around India by train with both of them right about now.”

“Nineteen-year-old Liv Tyler! Rachel Weisz and Jeremy Irons! Crazy terra-cotta sculptures! That amazing ’90s soundtrack! The best swimming pool in the history of swimming pools! Who wouldn’t want to while away a summer in the Tuscan countryside with Bernardo Bertolucci? I certainly did.”

“Nicole Kidman was 16 when she made BMX Bandits, an awesomely ridiculous ’80s kids’ movie. What makes it great (apart from being Kidman’s first feature) are the vividly shot locations around Sydney, Australia—in particular, the beautiful beach suburb of Manly, where I lived back then. Today I watch it with my kids (when I can get them off YouTube).”

“I realize this isn’t all that exotic, but the island of Oahu has had a special place in my heart since I saw the original Blue Crush for the first time—in the theaters—circa 2002. The location and the entire plotline tapped into my 20-something (read: present-day) dropout dream to take up surfing full time, live on the beach, and date a pro quarterback.”

“In Only Lovers Left Alive, Tangiers and Detroit act like main characters. They make Adam and Eve’s world feel vast, isolated, and almost apocalyptic.”

“The incredible house in Godard’s Contempt: Casa Malaparte by the architect Adalberto Libera, built circa 1937, on the Isle of Capri. Who wouldn’t want to hang out there with Fritz Lang and Brigitte Bardot, even if no one seems to be having a good time?”

“Does Manhattan count as an escapist movie if I live there? Because every time the skyline dances through the opening credits to ‘Rhapsody in Blue,’ I want to move here all over again.”
