“I have never been that adventurous when it comes to denim. I didn’t realize just how classic my collectsion was—dark wash J Brand skinny jeans for winter, classic cut Levi 501’s in lighter washes for summer—until I had one of those ‘I have nothing to wear’ moments where you stare at your closet hoping to come across something, anything, with that extra oomph. Obviously, my skinnies aren’t going anywhere, but sometimes we all have to spice things up. These are my new statement jeans by Nasty Gal’s reworked vintage line called After Party. The salvaged denim (mine are bootcut Levi’s) suits my classic side, while the modern reworking (I love the top to bottom grommets—so gaudy!) serves as the perfect denim comeback.”

“I hadn’t worn flares since J Brand did those extreme bell-bottoms (in, what, 2008?) when my colleague wrote about Citizen of Humanity’s Fleetwood. After reading her testimonial, I obviously had to try them for myself. I now own them in three washes! What’s more, after years of skinnies, they’ve opened the flare floodgates.”

“These jaunty mid-length, frayed jeans manage to check all the trend boxes, while still being ridiculously comfortable. After years of stifling skinnies, they feel not just liberating, but they automatically up the funk factor of any outfit.”

“After what seems like years of wearing Hedi Slimane’s sleek skinny jeans for Saint Laurent, I finally found my new favorite jeans with J Brand’s Photo Ready ankle skinny version. The cotton is super soft, and the length hits perfectly whether worn with Chelsea boots or sick kicks. And while I’m not a fan of pre-shredded denim, this version achieves the look with subtlety and simplicity.”

“I'm always hesitant to spend hundreds of dollars on a pair of new trendy jeans. It’s hard to commit to a new style that you’ve never tried before; what if it’s not flattering? What if you wear it once and never again? I recently bought my first cropped flares from Zara and a pair of high-waisted boot-flares from Topshop—both under $100. They are both great quality denim that also broke me out of my winter skinny jean tucked-into-boots rut!”

“While the comeback of flares is no longer breaking news, recently struggling to determine how to hem my first pair I tried them on for Market Editor Chelsea Zalopany while strapped into a pair of five-inch platforms. Her advice? Don’t. Despite momentary mumbles of protest, the transformative effect was inarguable. I suddenly had legs for miles and a new height of five foot ten—needless to say I have not looked back!”

“I like to think of these jeans as not exactly breaking my style rut but improving a style constant. I tend towards an ankle-crop skinny jean and this is the perfect crop length, plus—most importantly—a high waist, which is a game-changer for me. So the life lesson in this is: Crop the hem, heighten the waist!

“There has definitely been denim coming out lately that has changed the game for me—cropped and flared. Standing at a cool five foot seven (okay, five foot six and a half) usually means I have to create my own long lines, and for some unlikely reason a clean crop and slight flare is working more than my old revered skinnies ever did. Guess if it ain’t broke, break it.”

“Last month, I walked into Opening Ceremony in a pair of dark low-rise jeans, and back out in these Marques ‘ Almeida cropped flares. They're a little out there, with the dramatic fraying at the knee, but the black denim keeps things subdued, while the silhouette makes you look long and lean—even when you're five foot two."

"At age eleven, I swore off all jean jackets when they became too popular among my sixth grade class. And for the first time since then, slipping on a crisp denim overcoat just feels so right."

“People equate denim with being sloppy, but for me I realized that my sloppiest was sloppier than denim. I really haven’t felt passionate about denim since I was in fourth grade. Now I can’t get enough! Boyfriend, wide-leg, high-waisted, skinny, designer . . . bring it on!”

“I’ve always relied on tried-and-true blues—straight-leg classics in various rinses of deep indigo, though I basically live in Re/Done’s now—but it was a Fashion Week in-a-pinch purchase in Paris that completely brought me out of my denim rut. Though I’ve never been much for pencil skirts (or denim skirts, actually), this patch pocketed A.P.C. number feels just right, right now (and has already come in handy countless times this season).”

“I’d have to say, though I’m wearing this insane pair right now (vintage button-down fly Levi’s with a massive portrait of Elvis’s face plastered on them from ankle to pocket on each leg), it really is the larger-than-life flare—or rather, a true bellbottom—that has truly broken me out of my denim rut. I swore them off while in high school and went on a skinny-jean bender—but my coworker made me try on a pair last week and now I’m a convert.”

“True story: A few years ago, while giving it my all dancing to the Pussycat Dolls at a friend’s house party, I split my pants doing one of those sexy-drop moves. Shortly after, I was introduced to the Levi’s Commuter. With a reinforced crotch (designed for urban cyclists), I have yet to split my pants again, and am free to sexy-drop as I please.”

“The culotte is one of those jeans that most people fear. ‘What shoe do I wear; what top goes with this?' are both thoughts that definitely went through my head at one point. After playing around a bit, I decided there isn’t one answer to wearing culottes: After breaking out of my denim shell, I might even go to such lengths to say the culotte is this summer’s denim of choice."

“I used to only wear dark skinny jeans—I didn’t want to draw too much attention to my legs, since I never found them to be my most flattering feature. But I finally jumped on the boyfriend jean bandwagon and got a pair of light pink distressed jeans and a pair of painted jeans. Both add some much-needed color to my wardrobe and I get a ton of compliments, so I am no longer self-conscious about how my lower half looks.”

“I’ve been a denim traditionalist (read: snob) for the better part of my adult life, so the idea of anything pre-distressed or stretch (God forbid!) wasn’t something I would ever consider. Trying to find the perfect pair of cropped and flared vintage jeans was beginning to become impossible though, so when I stumbled on this pair by Citizens of Humanity, it was a real eureka moment. Yes they come pre-aged, but somehow the distressing is really flattering on the body and feels authentic. And the light weight of them means I can actually layer them under all my slip dresses without looking bulky."
