When Thom Browne’s head of footwear design Anna Scott met Joe “JB” Chen in 2016, they immediately knew they were destined to be a pair. “Joe is my perfect fit,” Anna jokes. “His foot is our shoe sample size.” While she first connected with the actor and producer on Hinge, their first date took place at Lovers of Today in New York’s East Village. “When Anna showed up, she was wearing a big Marc Jacobs Mickey Mouse sweater, which I thought was really fun and different,” JB remembers. “We immediately had no trouble talking about whatever. It felt pretty effortless from the start.” Anna says she was definitely impressed by their first encounter. “He looked way better than his photos, and he was so sweet—talking about his family nonstop and showing me funny dog videos,” she says. The couple admits that dating was tough at the beginning, as Anna was working for Marc Jacobs at the time and was frequently in Italy. “The first time Joe came to visit me in Venice, we took a weekend trip to the Dolomites,” remembers Anna. “After hiking and row boating around Lago Di Braies together, I realized I was falling in love with him.”
From that trip onward, the creatives’ relationship blossomed as they became increasingly integrated into each other’s lives. “After seven years together, Joe casually said we should look at rings while eating takeout at home,” says Anna. “I cried.” The couple worked with Greg Kwiat to design Anna’s custom canary diamond ring together ahead of a surprise proposal. “In very ‘Joe’ fashion, his official proposal was on March 18, 2024, right before bed in our Upper East Side apartment while in our pajamas and mouth guards, having just finished watching one of our favorite reality shows,” shares Anna. “It was bittersweet because the following week he had to fly to Iraq for a month for a film, The President’s Cake, he was working on.” However, the couple were able to kick off their wedding era in a proper way with an engagement party in Singapore hosted by JB’s mom, Veronica Chen Baker. “[She] threw us the most charming dinner party, complete with a local jazz band, speeches, and many Yam Sengs,” says Anna.
Since Anna and JB’s favorite thing to do is travel, they always knew they would want to bring their friends and family together for a destination wedding. Lake Como was an easy choice for their celebrations. “Italy has always been special to us; Joe would come to visit me in Italy throughout our relationship, and we would take these opportunities to explore the country,” shares Anna. “On one of these visits, Joe and I fell in love with Bellagio and the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. We stayed at the Serbelloni over a weekend and had never seen views of Como like that before. Ever since that stay, I thought it would be perfect for an intimate, but beautiful wedding.”
Once the couple chose a May 31, 2025 wedding date at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, they dove into crafting their vision and figuring out logistics. “Honestly, the whole planning process reminded me of producing a runway show. So much prep, design, development, hard work, problem solving, pivoting... just for one magical day,” says Anna. Since the couple wanted someone local to take on planning, Anna and JB hired Andrea Naar Alba from Italian Weddings and Events to execute the wedding weekend. “We all clicked right away, and I instantly knew I could trust her taste, which, as a designer, is no easy feat,” shares the bride. Their vision was to focus on the natural beauty of Lake Como and to conjure an air of elegant, timeless glamour. “We didn’t want anything too flashy or over the top for our wedding, as is easy to do for Lake Como weddings,” says Anna. “Andrea understood that completely, and was a dream to work with.”
Naturally, Anna wanted to place an important emphasis on fashion when curating her wedding aesthetic—and all roads pointed to Thom Browne. “As soon as Joe proposed, I went to Thom to ask him if he would design my wedding dress,” she says. “I couldn’t imagine Joe and I wearing anything else for our wedding.” The couple would ultimately wear at least one Thom Browne piece throughout all three days of events—including plenty of footwear. “Thom, my shoe team, and I made seven pairs of custom shoes for the wedding day, including sneakers for dancing,” says the bride. “I had hip surgery some months before and wanted lots and lots of dancing.” Browne also had a custom Swarovski crystal “Hector” clutch made for Anna to carry through the weekend. “Now one of my most coveted possessions,” says Anna. “Truly.”
The bride began the wedding weekend in an Old Hollywood-inspired look with a giant Gigi Burris hat, long Valentino gloves, a Wiederhoeft corset and skirt, and Thom Browne shoes. “Of course,” she adds. Later that evening for the rehearsal dinner at Crotto dei Platani, Anna donned a full Thom Browne look with a corset, pants, and a cropped jacket from the couture fall 2024 runway collectsion, along with heel-less spike shoes. “Rehearsal dinner glam inspo was ’90s Nicole Kidman—in Dior by John Galliano to the 1997 Oscars, specifically,” says Anna. The bride worked with The Studio Como for her hair and her friend Luciano Chiarello for her wedding makeup. “Honestly, having someone I fully trust like Luciano made the ‘getting ready’ process so fun and stress-free,” she says.
The rest of her Thom Browne looks were custom creations made in-house by the atelier. “I knew I wanted a Thom Browne dress with one of our amazing corsets, but other than that guidance, I really trusted Thom to do what he does best,” says Anna. Her ceremony gown featured a high neckline tied off with a bow, an elongated dropped waist cinched by the hidden corset, and a full skirt with an underlayer of tulle for volume. A classic Hollywood wave hairstyle—“Veronica Lake meets Kim Basinger in L.A. Confidential”—added to the elegance of the ensemble. For the reception, Anna would change into a custom ivory version of a dress from the Thom Browne fall 2025 runway collectsion featuring asymmetrical pleating. The bride finished the night in a Wiederhoeft mini with a tulle skirt and custom Thom Browne sneakers to keep her going on the dance floor. For her final wedding weekend look, the design team surprised Anna with a mini version of her ceremony gown in blue to wear to their Sunday beach party.
The groom worked with the Thom Browne made-to-measure team to create three custom tuxedo looks for the wedding day. “Our English brogue factory made two custom pairs of wedding shoes for Joe with a special inside joke inscribed in each pair,” says the bride. For the ceremony, JB wore a black tuxedo with custom box calf wingtip boots. When the reception arrived, he would change into another tuxedo look featuring a white dinner jacket. Hemlines raised for the after-party as JB danced the night away in a made-to-measure tuxedo with a pleated skirt.
The bride and groom weren’t the only ones in Thom Browne on their wedding day. In addition to a few guests who work at the brand, Anna's maid of honor Ellee Lee and best man Daniel Vosovic both wore the designer, as well as the wedding’s two ring bearers. Vosovic, founder of made-to-order brand The Kit, also created dresses for the bridesmaids to wear featuring two custom prints based on the wedding design.
The wedding day arrived, and guests gathered in the gardens of Serbelloni with the backdrop of the lake behind the floral-adorned ceremony platform. The wedding party walked down the aisle to a string quartet rendition of “Pure Imagination” from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the groom processed through the floral-lined aisle with his mother. The quartet then played Max Richter’s Vivaldi-inspired “Spring 1” as Anna walked down a hill with her brother towards the aisle, where she met her father for the final stretch of the procession. “One of our best friends, actor Kieran Mulcare, officiated,” says the bride. “After our adorable Thom-Browne-clad nephews brought the rings down the aisle, we had the guests pass around the rings to ‘bless’ them with happy wishes for Joe and me. Kieran surprised us with gelato (one of our favorite things) at the altar while we waited for our guests to complete the task of blessing.” Looking back at the ceremony, JB says, “It really did seem to rush by in spite of trying to ‘stay present,’ but I do remember feeling very at ease with everything that was happening around us.” The couple exchanged vows and sealed their new marriage with a kiss.
Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed acoustic entertainment and hors d’ouevres in the gardens, while the couple took a Riva boat ride and had a small photo shoot with their photographer Cinzia Bruschini. “Both she and her whole team were wonderful to work with; cool, and constantly ready with ideas,” says Anna. “Having that moment gave Joe and I an opportunity to be alone together and let everything that just happened sink in.”
The newlyweds made their grand entrance in their reception looks in the hotel’s ballroom, which was decorated minimally to let the space’s ornate interiors shine. “Think modern, sculptural touches with a subtle nod to Italian aristocratic summers of a bygone era,” explains the bride. Conversation flowed as guests enjoyed a multi-course meal. “We did our speeches the night before at our rehearsal dinner so we could keep the reception all about eating, celebrating, and dancing,” says Anna.
The bride and groom then changed into their mini looks as the party got started. For their first dance, the two took to the floor to Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon.” Anna notes: “I’m ashamed to say we actually took lessons, but I don’t think anyone could tell.” Adds JB: “This was my fault. I fully forgot a step... or two.”
The bride also danced the “Laendler Waltz” from the Sound of Music with her father. “Lots of mistakes were made, but we had a good laugh,” she says. For the rest of the night, the dance floor was filled as golden oldies and ’90s hits played. “Guests were also treated to private gelato cart service, as Joe and my love for gelato knows no limits,” says Anna. The weekend finally came to a close as the newlyweds and their friends recovered and took a swim in Lake Como at the Victoria Beach Club.
Reflecting on the weekend, the bride and groom simply say: “We look back on everything with such love.”
