Last year made clear that the milk mania isn’t slowing down anytime soon. We’ve been closely monitoring its rise—think milky toners and fragrance milks—and now it’s hair milk’s time to shine. While these lightweight hydrators have been popular solutions for textured hair, delivering moisture without weighing down curls and coils, the category seems to be expanding as brands look to skin-ify hair care. What exactly is a hair milk, and why is it buzzy?

Per celebrity hairstylist Keshia Tabaran, think of a hair milk as a lightweight leave-in. “It’s usually thinner than a cream but more nourishing than a spray, so it hydrates the hair and helps with detangling while still keeping movement,” she says. The industry is just now catching up to how exceptional milky formulas are—thanks in large part to their ability to nourish without the weight —and their popularity reflects a bigger shift toward consumers concerned with overall hair health and hydration.

Fellow celebrity hairstylist and JVN Hair founder Jonathan van Ness would agree, as his brand features a best-selling formula. “While moisture and smoothing benefits can be a hair milk’s sole purpose, many formulas also contain added features, too, like hair protection, added strength, or, in our case, style memory,” van Ness tells Vogue.

With that in mind, there’s little not to love about hair milks; it’s just about finding the right formula for your hair type. Below, we rounded up our eight favorite picks, with expert insights from celebrity hairstylists along the way.

Best Universal Leave-In: Davines OI All in One Milk

Davines

OI All In One Milk

  • Why We Love It: Tabaran’s favorite leave-in for all hair types—that’s right, all hair types, pin straight to curly—comes from Davines. Talk about a crowd-pleaser! The clean formula features a blend of roucou oil, vitamin B5, glycerin, and sunflower-seed oil to impart impossibly soft-to-the-touch lengths. And as a bonus, the scent is considered to be particularly delectable and creamy.
  • Editor’s Experience: “Uninstalling your braids? The oil-infused mist makes easy work of untangling kinks and knots. Refreshing lackluster curls? It also hydrates hair, smooths frizz, and imparts a healthy sheen. This emulsion is made with protective ingredients that shield your hair from damage, and it can also be used before intensive heat styling. Best of all, it smells exquisite. I’d even say that its scent supersedes some of the best perfumes in my collectsion. It has a clean, sparkling aroma distinctive to fragrances that feature aldehyde—think the fresh profile of Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s 724 but for a fraction of the cost.” —Tracy Achonwa, British Vogue contributor

JVN Hair

Complete Blowout Styling Milk

  • Why We Love It: The goal of JVN’s hair milk is to make your blowout even better. The formula boasts heat protection and style memory, setting the stage for a style that lasts longer. “The formula contains orchid milk, which locks hydration in, but also cassia-bark polymer, which helps seal in your heat style for 48 hours,” van Ness explains. “I imagine it as putting pantyhose over each hair, which seals in the shape and seals out humidity or frizz while protecting the hair up to 450 degrees.” If your hair is curly, textured, or humidity prone, the formula will help smooth unwanted frizz, van Ness notes. Meanwhile, if you have straight hair that hates holding a curl, he suggests a pump of this product to set the stage before styling.

And if you need inspiration on its uses, Roszak recently applied it to help create Emma Stone’s flawless bob at the 2026 Golden Globes.
  • Editor’s Experience: “The newest hair milk in my arsenal, this serum is hard not to love. Everything You Need to Know

Benefits of Using a Hair Milk

“Clients want products that actually care for the hair while they style it, and hair milks do exactly that,” says Tabaran. “When the hair is properly moisturized, it just behaves better overall.” Austin agrees, noting that these formulas impart moisture and softness without leaving hair feeling heavy. “Hair milks are great for defining curls, smoothing frizz, and controlling flyaways,” he says.

Who Should Use a Hair Milk?

Any hair type can benefit from adding a hair milk to their overall routine. That said, Tabaran notes that these formulas are especially great for curly, coily, or textured hair because those hair types naturally crave more moisture. However, she notes she also uses these formulas on fine to wavy hair types for weightless hydration.

Plus, Austin continues, the rise in embracing one’s natural texture has led brands to create specialized hair-milk formulations for different hair types and textures. The common denominator, though, is a focus on hydration. “You’ll usually see ingredients like coconut, aloe, or lightweight oils that help soften and smooth the hair.”

How to Apply Hair Milk

“Depending on the formulation, hair milks are typically used after your shower while hair is still damp to add additional moisture, heat protection, and shine,” says van Ness. “They can make detangling easier and help to create a smoother finished look while leaving hair feeling soft and healthy.”

Tabaran recommends applying a small amount of product from mid-lengths to ends, then combing it through so it’s evenly distributed. For curly or textured hair, she advises scrunching the product in—and you can even use a tiny bit of product on dry hair as a refresher. No matter what, Austin emphasizes that one of the best things about these products is their versatility, and you can tailor your application accordingly. “You can leave it in to enhance your natural texture or blow-dry it in if you want a smoother, shinier finish,” he says.

Do Pro Hairstylists Use Hair Milks on Clients?

Experts are unanimous: They frequently reach for these products to prep hair. “A lot of stylists will use a hair milk to detangle and add moisture before styling,” says Tabaran. “It’s great because it conditions the hair without making it too heavy, so you can still layer other styling products on top if you need to.”

Austin also turns to hair milk most often when caring for chemically treated hair—and employs another unique method too. “I like to use hair milk as a cutting lotion,” he says. “It gives the hair a little slip and hydration while I’m working, without weighing it down.”

Can Hair Milk Replace Hair Serums and Oils in a Routine?

Ultimately, hair milks and serums serve two different purposes. “[Hair milks] can replace a leave-in conditioner in a lot of cases, but it doesn’t replace oils or serums,” Tabaran says.

Van Ness echoes this sentiment, reminding us that the formulation of the products you’re using and the key concern you’re treating are key considerations. “Hair milks are primarily formulated for moisture, but if you’re using a serum for strength, for example, you’ll want to use both the serum and the milk,” van Ness says. “The same goes for your hair oil, as most are used primarily to lock moisture rather than supply it.”

How We Tested

When we test and review a product, we take a holistic approach to deliver well-rounded product recommendations. First, we lean on Vogue’s vast network of experts—pro hairstylists, many of whom boast celebrity client rosters—to gain professional acumen on the industry’s standout products, ones these specialists would actually use on their clients. We pair their expertise with our editorial best practices to curate thoughtful edits.

With hair milks, we selected the best based on the following criteria: ingredients, texture, and the hair concerns they address. To do this, we paired our own personal tests of each formula with expert guidance and reviewer insights to determine which we would recommend to you.
