Have your cheeks been flushed, and no, you’re not blushing? It may be time to consider the best skin care for rosacea to help calm things down. While it’s normal for skin to flush on occasion—after a long run, when you’re spending time outside on a chilly (or hot!) day, or even in the presence of a crush—but if your face is red, inflamed, and irritated more often than not, there’s a chance you have an underlying condition. “Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition of the face that primarily affects the cheeks, nose, chin, and eyelids,” explains Morgan Rabach, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York.

While redness is the most common symptom of rosacea, it is not the only thing to look out for. According to Navin S. Arora, MD, rosacea can cause acne-like breakouts, visible blood vessels, eye irritation, and even thickened skin over time. Experts say the key is to avoid (as best as possible) a rosacea flare-up—a period when symptoms are worse than normal—when skin gets redder, more irritated, and rougher in texture, with acne-like bumps and breakouts. Unprotected sun exposure, extreme temperatures, stress, and the consumption of alcohol, spicy foods, and caffeine are common triggers. “While these things can cause temporary flushing in anyone, people with rosacea experience a much more pronounced and persistent reaction,” board-certified dermatologist Richard Bottiglione, MD, tells Vogue.

Lifestyle choices directly impact rosacea severity—in a particularly forward-facing way—just as much as choosing the right skin-care products. “Factors like alcohol or sun exposure because even short daily UV exposure through car windows can keep rosacea chronically active,” board-certified dermatologist Dr. Azadeh Shirazi, MD, explains. “In rosacea, irritation accumulates quietly before a flare appears.”

Below, we’re sharing the best skincare for rosacea as well as insights into ingredients and in-office treatments to consider on your quest for calmer, more comfortable skin. Just remember, no product is universal, and that’s especially true when seeking out skin care for rosacea: “Since everyone’s skin reacts differently, patch-testing new products is always a good idea,” says Dr. Arora.

I call it the jack-of-all-trades because it’s very beneficial for all skin types,” says Dr. Shirazi. “It helps reduce inflammation, calms redness, and also treats the breakouts without disrupting the skin barrier.” Fellow board-certified dermatologist Dara Spearman, MD, agrees, adding that while the ingredient is usually well tolerated, it’s still important to monitor for dryness or stinging. The sweet spot in application? Starting with once daily and only increasing to twice daily. “Using it consistently over several weeks often yields the best results,” she adds.

  • Why We Love It: Dieux’s newest product, certified by the National Eczema Association, delivers intense hydration and calming relief with its 1% colloidal oatmeal extract formula.
“[Dieux chemist Becca Perry] chose to build the formulation around what we call a ‘crystal lamellar’ base,” Joyce de Lemos, Dieux’s cofounder and chief of product, previously said. “This has a similar structure to skin and can help with reducing TEWL (transepidermal water loss) and increasing active efficacy. The experience is soft, supple skin with a nourishing, cloud-like after feel.”
  • Editor’s Experience: “I’ll probably never look at another moisturizer again during the winter. This has been a particularly chilly New York City winter, and my skin is all the angrier and drier for it. Everything You Need to Know

What is the best treatment for rosacea?

There’s no single treatment that will necessarily work for everyone, but in addition to avoiding common triggers, “a mix of prescription medications, over-the-counter skin care, and in-office laser treatments can work wonders,” says Dr. Arora. Your derm might prescribe oral or topical antibiotics, sulfur-based soaps or lotions, or topical vasoconstrictors. In more severe cases, isotretinoin (Accutane) or prednisone can help, according to Dr. Bottiglione. Lasers and light therapy like CO2, IPL, and ND:Yag can help reduce redness and visible blood vessels over time. When it comes to over-the-counter options (like the products we shared above), there are specific ingredients to look for as well as to avoid.

What to Look for in a Rosacea Treatment

Simplicity is key, says Dr. Rabach, who recommends seeking out formulas designed for sensitive skin. That means any product you use should not contain common irritants like alcohol, fragrance, physical exfoliants, or chemical sunscreens. Look for actively hydrating and soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe, allantoin, ceramides, and niacinamide, all of which can help repair the skin barrier, as well as anti-inflammatories like centella asiatica (cica), mineral SPF zinc oxide, and azelaic acid.

How to Identify Rosacea

“Rosacea is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed conditions I see in my practice,” says Dr. Shirazi—many of her patients think they have standard sensitive skin or a product reaction. “The key difference is that rosacea follows a chronic, repeating pattern. Comparatively, contact dermatitis usually has a clear trigger and improves once the offending product is stopped, whereas rosacea is chronic, causing persistent flushing across the central face, specifically the cheeks, nose, and chin.” In addition, burning or stinging could be a clue that you have rosacea.

Dr. Spearman agrees, going into detail on how rosacea may appear differently depending on your skin tone. “On fair skin, redness is prominent and more immediately noticeable, while in deeper skin tones, inflammation may appear as warmth, subtle discoloration, or a grayish/purplish undertone rather than classic redness,” she says.

Ingredients to Avoid When You Have Rosacea

According to the experts, certain irritants are common foes to anyone with rosacea.
“Fragrance, even natural fragrances, is a major trigger, as are essential oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, and tea tree. Witch hazel, menthol, camphor, and astringents frequently worsen burning and flushing,” Dr. Shirazi explains. In addition, harsh exfoliants and physical scrubs can further destabilize the skin barrier. While retinols aren’t totally off-limits, these products, too, should be approached with caution, favoring more gentle formulas.

Common Skin-Care Mistakes Rosacea Patients Make

One of the most common, but well intended, errors Dr. Spearman notices in her patients is layering too many active ingredients at once in an attempt to clear flare-ups, while instead further irritating them. Another no-no? Skipping SPF, because sun exposure is a major rosacea trigger.

Dr. Shirazi also often finds that patients often mistake rosacea for acne, swapping in skin-clearing products that only worsen inflammation. “I also have seen a lot of product hopping. With every flare, patients want to try a new routine or new product to help. But rosacea improves with consistency, not experimentation,” she says.

Is there a cure for rosacea?

And, unfortunately, that’s all you can do when you have rosacea—manage it, as it can’t be cured. In fact, scientists are still trying to figure out what causes rosacea. “Most people, including myself, believe it has a genetic component,” explains Richard Bottiglione, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Phoenix. It can affect all skin types and tones, though it’s more common in those with fair complexions and aging skin. “There’s research that suggests there are overactive blood vessels in people with rosacea and irregularity in how the blood vessels dilate and constrict,” adds Dr. Rabach.
