Let’s be so for real, shopping sustainably as a fat person is often really, really hard. While pop-up plus-size markets like Thick Thrift in Los Angeles and Pretty Girl Markets in Texas are a deeply welcome addition to the vintage and thrift scene, the old saying of “people just used to be smaller!” can still be hard to get past when you’re shopping for vintage and used clothing over, say, a size 12. With that difficulty in mind, Vogue has put together a guide to 7 of the very best plus-size vintage options across America.

There are, of course, plenty of amazing size-inclusive online options like Bad Moon Vintage and Goldies Vintage (and IRL spots like Flower Child in Columbus, Ohio, and Moody Goose in San Francisco that offer dedicated plus-size sections), but for this list we’re sticking to stores where all or most of the merchandise is plus-size and can be tried on in person.

Enjoy, and happy (vintage) shopping!

Artemis Plus Size Thrift (Portland, Maine)

Just steps from Portland’s historic Casco Bay Bridge lies Artemis Plus Size Thrift, one of the very best places to dig for vintage and thrifted treasures on all of the East Coast. In keeping with Portland’s low-key vibe, prices at Artemis are generally on the more reasonable end, but there are some true retro gems tucked in between the chill beach tees and jean shorts.

Berriez (Brooklyn, New York)

We’ve written before about the unparalleled excellence of Emma Zack’s Bed-Stuy vintage shop, but in a world of rapidly diminishing sustainable plus-size options, it’s a consistent joy to be able to walk in (or, ideally, make a cute little appointment) and find something that actually fits and thrills you.

I Want Seconds (Portland, Oregon)

There are a lot of good vintage clothes that wash up in Oregon (you can thank all the ’90s riot grrrls who never left for that!), and a good cross-section of them can be found at I Want Seconds, Portland’s only fully plus-size resale shop that hosts a wide variety of progressive community events in addition to buying and selling used clothing.

Luvsick Plus (Chicago, Illinois)

If you only have a day or two in Chicago, make sure to put Luvsick Plus on your agenda; even if you’re a smaller size, you’ll be wowed by their impressive array of vintage shoes and accessories, and plus-size shoppers will delight at the extreme range of options on display, from ’90s-era tube tops to the kind of fitted ’50s day dresses that can be extremely hard to locate in a size XL or larger.

Size range: XL to 4X

PLUS Bklyn (Brooklyn, NY)

Instagram content

This Brooklyn plus-size vintage and resale shop opened at its original Williamsburg location in 2017 and has been serving major looks ever since; it’s a particularly safe bet to go to PLUS Bklyn if you’re on the hunt for formalwear, because their dress-and-suit section is reliably out of this world.

Address: 671 Manhattan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11222

Proud Mary Fashion (Los Angeles, California)

Instagram content

Don’t let Hollywood fool you; there are all sizes and shapes of bodies in the City of Angels, and Proud Mary is committed to dressing them all in everything from vintage and thrifted treasures to indie labels like Tyler McGillivary and No Less Than. (Proud Mary also has its own extremely fun line of accessories proclaiming everything from “Fat Bitch” to “Jesus Saves I Spend.”)
